Acupuncture is a therapeutic method for treating a wide variety of health concerns. Inserting fine, sterile, disposable needles into the skin at specific points controls pain and other symptoms.
Safe and effective, acupuncture is based on a centuries old Chinese healing practice. Today many practitioners around the world use acupuncture and other components of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to help people live fuller, healthier lives. Now it's your turn to experience the benefits of this treatment.
A healthy person has a constant, unimpeded flow of qi – or life force – that nourishes, replenishes, and protects the body. When this qi, pronounced 'chee', becomes blocked, the body manifests this stoppage as illness or pain.
Qi originates from major organs and flows along 12 regular and two extra continuous circulatory channels called meridians. There are points on the skin that are on the meridians, and are energetically connected to specific organs, body structures, and systems. The needles inserted at these points encourage the body to release hormones and chemicals that are able to reduce pain, regulate the endocrine system, and calm the nervous system.
Acupuncture can treat a variety of physical and emotional issues including digestive and sleep issues, women's health concerns, chronic pain, sports-related injuries, and more.
Usually patients begin feeling better within three to four treatments, and a course of ten sessions is usually recommended. Acupuncture is cumulative – each treatment builds upon the last, so consistency is the key to success.
Every person is unique and experiences acupuncture differently, but most people find it very relaxing. You might feel a small prick and some soreness when the needle is inserted, but that sensation quickly dissipates.
The first session is usually just over an hour. Each session thereafter is 45 minutes to an hour long.
Loosely fitting clothes are the best. Depending on what you are having acupuncture for, most people do not need to disrobe.
Yes. Acupuncture works with your energy, so having a snack before your treatment is important. If your treatment is in the morning, make sure you have had a nutritious breakfast beforehand. Avoid having any caffeine before your treatment.
Most patients feel very relaxed and you may feel a little tired after the first treatment. Alcohol should be avoided for the rest of the day after acupuncture.
